Don’t Sell Me a Dog

Definition:

Popular until 1870, this phrase meant “Don’t lie to me!” Apparently, people who sold dogs back in the day were prone to trying to pass off mutts as purebreds.

Exemplification of usage:

I can’t believe he thinks I will believe that that is a real diamond. “Dude, don’t sell me a dog” is what I should tell him!
